Application:

The ZY-PHD10 Fully Automatic Smoothness Tester is designed based on the operating principle of the internationally recognized Bekk smoothness tester and is a specialized instrument used to measure the surface smoothness of paper. Under specific contact conditions and a given pressure difference, it takes a certain amount of time for a specific volume of air to permeate between the sample surface and the annular surface; this time is expressed in seconds (s). The longer the time, the better the paper’s smoothness; the higher the smoothness, the better the print quality.

Test Principle (Buick Method / Air Leak Method):

  1. Clamp the sample between a standard polished glass surface and a sealed probe, and apply a standard pressure.
  2. Create a sealed air chamber and record the time it takes for a fixed volume of air to leak through the gap between the sample and the glass.
  3. The smoother the surface → the smaller the gap → the slower the air leaks → the longer the time → the higher the smoothness.
